About Cathy

Cathy Wiggins was born and raised in Greenville, North Carolina, a small town east of Raleigh. She grew up with a love for art and creating. She learned at a young age from her father who was an avid furniture maker that if you can see something in your mind's eye, then you can make it real. This, she learned, applied to life as well as art.

She graduated in the top of her college class with degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science followed by a Masters in Mathematics, but her true love was always art.

During her many years in the telecommunications corporate world she always had her true dream in mind, to create art full time. Her nights and weekends were spent creating art using every medium she could find. It took her several years of painting before she stumbled across a technique for creating watercolor paintings using a layering and masking process that eventually led to Mapo - Masking and Pouring Over - a painting technique that was truly hers.

Cathy made a name for herself in the watercolor world both locally and nationally with her innovative Mapo paintings from photographs. Her watercolors have been included in many juried art shows and also solo shows of her own.

In 2000, Cathy and her family moved to the beautiful Lake Gaston area of northern North Carolina. She was able to quit her corporate job and focus on her art full time. It was in October of 2002 that her neighbor introduced her to quilting and took Cathy to her first quilting guild meeting. By Christmas of that year, Cathy had made five quilts, which were all very traditional. After attending her first quilt show in Williamsburg, Virginia, she new that she had finally found the artistic outlet that she had been looking for but felt she had never quite achieved with paint as her palette. She saw that anything is possible using fabric as your palette with the added bonus that you could wrap up in the completed work of art, unlike a painting that just hung on the wall.

She took what she had learned with her Mapo painting technique and applied it to quilting and has now developed Value Quilting. By using this technique, Cathy is gaining national recognition with her quilts being juried into both regional and national show as well as bringing home awards and ribbons for her machine quilting and overall design.

Cathy is now developing quilting patterns so that others may create quilts using Value Quilting, and sheoffers workshops and lectures for further knowledge of this technique.
